Halloween Party Time, and Some Mad Lighting Experiments

I spent a lot of time with a roll of tin-foil, and some cardboard panels, and duct tape trying to create a broad lighting situation using only my Nikon SB-800 speedlight for some "mugshots". These first couple of pics are the result. I like them. They have a strange quality, but I think I need to work on this lighting technique a little more. It definitely has some potential. But then, in the process of trying to figure out exactly what was going on with my tin-foil reflectors I discovered that if I turned off my flash and used a really long shutter speed, the spotlight on the side of Craig's house (in conjunction with my tin-foil panels) was creating this weird wrap-around, side-lighting effect that was extremely crude, but somehow was working for me, and this subject matter, more appropriately. They have a quality like photos you might find in a dusty box in your grandfathers garage. I need to try and re-create this lighting again sometime in a more controlled manner.

Utah Friends of Basset Hounds

Last week I volunteered my services to photograph some dogs for the Utah Friends of Basset Hounds. These guys were not my most cooperative subjects (Rachel and I had to dispense a lot of treats) but they would all make great best friends. There aren't a lot of creatures in this world that are more loyal and loving than a basset hound. I know that by experience. These dogs, and many more, all deserve a great home.

Zombies in the SLC

No reason to get excited, the thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.
